Going off your comments regarding Gay Patty, I thought about the possibility of it being hinted at earlier as you said (perhaps also then being intertwined with Homer’s dealing with his homophobia in Homer’s Enemy) along with a recent look at the ending to Selma’s Choice with Selma’s confiding in Homer about the difficulties of Parenting suggesting her gaining a level of empathy with him.

    If they made these into real changes that were worked into the show organically along with other side characters development with appropriate serialisation, would it have been possible for the show to have sustained a reasonable level of quality beyond the golden age or avoid Flanderisation? Or was the process an inevitability?
